Kicking it Up a Notch on SH3 with N2P Controls

State Highway 3 is a vital transportation link in New Zealand, connecting New Plymouth to the broader Taranaki and Waikato regions. When Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency realised it was high time to boost safety and efficiency on this crucial route, they knew exactly who to call.

This road isn’t just another piece of tarmac—it’s the lifeline for major hubs like Port Taranaki and New Plymouth Airport, teeming with traffic that’s only getting busier by the day. With a history that’s as marked by crashes as it is by connectivity, it was obvious that change was imperative.

Enter Fulton Hogan, bringing their heavyweight construction prowess, alongside Hynds Pipes, who supplied all the essential materials. Then there’s Peter Carroll at Aquate, the wizard behind the pump station’s design—think of him as the maestro ensuring everything flows smoother than a fine Scotch.

As for us at N2P? We rolled up our sleeves and delivered custom-built control systems, tailor-made for this mammoth project. Our mission? To construct a state-of-the-art pump station equipped to handle significantly more stormwater, a challenge brought on by road widening and upgrades.

Here’s the rundown on what we implemented:

  • Stable Operation: We integrated soft starters to combat the challenge of unstable power supplies, ensuring smooth and stable operations right from the pump start-up.
  • Advanced Monitoring: A hydrostatic level sensor was installed for precise control over start, stop, assist, and alarm levels within the tank, complemented by backup level float controls for added reliability.
  • User Interface: The control system was kitted out with a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) that features an in-built Human-Machine Interface (HMI) display, making it easy to monitor and adjust operations on the fly.
  • Fault Indication: Pilot lights on the panel provide immediate fault indication, facilitating quick diagnostics and maintenance.
  • Manual Override: We included manual selector switches to allow operators the flexibility to override automatic controls when necessary.
  • Maintenance Support: An RCD protected general-purpose plug was installed to aid in maintenance and servicing activities.
  • Safety Features: Each pump was designed to be isolated individually, enabling safe and efficient replacement and maintenance.
  • Protection: The controller was securely housed within a roadside pillar box, offering enhanced protection against environmental elements and vandalism.

A Job Well Done

At the end of the day, NZ Transport Agency received more than just a purpose-built pump station. They got a system that’s slick, smart, and sustainable, all thanks to a collaborative effort that transformed engineering expertise into road safety excellence.

Hynds? They’re over the moon with how it all turned out—praising the easy installation, smooth operation, and comprehensive solution. That’s how we roll at N2P: We make it happen, we make it smart, and yes, we have a good laugh while we’re at it. Because if you’re not enjoying the ride, you’re definitely on the wrong road.
